August Cool History at The National Civil War Naval Museum

The National Civil War Naval Museum presents its final Cool History event of the summer, Infernal Machines, on August 4, 2012 from 1-4 p.m.

The August Cool History programs, in conjunction with National Inventor’s Month, focus on technology and innovation in the Civil War Navies. This year, we’ll be focusing on torpedoes (or what we know today as mines), their construction and use, and some famous examples of their implementation during the War.

Joint US Navy / National Civil War Naval Museum Exhibit Opens This Weekend

COLUMBUS, GA – This weekend, the National Civil War Naval Museum unveils a new exhibit created in conjunction with the National Museum of the US Navy, focusing on the Navy connections between the War of 1812 and the American Civil War.

Though 49 years apart in time, the War of 1812 and the American Civil War have common links in their Navies; the ships, the men who sailed them and the seas they sailed. This joint US Navy/National Civil War Naval Museum exhibit looks at the naval components of the War of 1812 and illuminates naval connections between that conflict and the Civil War.

Visitors will find information on Civil War ships and men with connections to the War of 1812 — David G. Farragut, Josiah Tattnall, Matthew C. Perry, Captain David Porter, the USS Constitution, USS United States and the USS Saratoga — as well as six free standing interpretive panels detailing specific role and exploits of United States Naval forces in the War of 1812, courtesy of the United States Navy.

In addition to this new exhibit, Museum guests will see the Nation’s largest display of Civil War Naval flags, rare and unique artifacts including an original cutter (ship’s boat) from the famed USS Hartford, recreated ship environments and the remains of two Civil War ships, including the CSS Jackson, a large ironclad gunboat built in Columbus, GA.

Port Columbus is located at 1002 Victory Drive in Columbus, Georgia, and is open seven days a week. For hours and more information, visit www.portcolumbus.org or call 706-327-9798

Christmas Parade in Uptown Columbus

What a great morning to spend with Gus and family.  The weather was just cold enough to remind us it was winter and Santa Claus was round and jolly.

It was a rushed morning as Gus and I hurriedly got things together to meet up with Jon and Angie Smiley so Gus and their son Aiden can hang out together.  As you can see, we took a lot of pictures. We got to see the mayor, clowns, BIG trucks, little trucks, old cars, horses, princesses and kings.

Gus really enjoyed himself as this was his first.

I am really starting to feel the holidays now!  Can’t wait til next year.

For Dads that Run

There are many Dads that enjoy getting out and pounding the pavement. Running is a great way to stay healthy and provide your kids with an active and healthy role model. Who needs NFL or NBA stars as role models when us Dads can influence our kids on a much more personal level? Also, kids have a TON of energy and are pretty fast once they start moving! Here are some events/races that will be in the Columbus, GA area this Fall.

August 27: Country’s BBQ Midnight Express

Come run this 5K race that starts just before midnight and help raise money to support the visually impaired.  This race always provides a fun atmosphere with plenty of music, food, and more.  This will be a culminating event for many local runners participating in the Couch to 5K program and there will be some challenge athletes providing inspiration.

October 15-16: The North Face Endurance Challenge

This event has something for everyone.  For the Dads (or Moms), there are distances from 5K to 50 miles.  There is even a 1 mile Karno Kids Run.  This event will be held in Pine Mountain, GA near the Liberty Pool area of FDR State Park.  Come check it out and meet Dean Karnazes, or “Karno” as he’s known in the running world.  This Dad is pretty amazing.  He’s running amazing distances to help raise raise awareness about childhood obesity.

After your race, you’ll be treated to a nice finish festival with music, massages, healthy food, and more.  The swag isn’t half bad either!

November 12: Soldier Marathon & Half Marathon

This will be second year for what is to become a premier race in Columbus, GA.  The inaugural race, in 2010, was well organized and supported and this year it is certain to only get better.  Runners will run through historic portions of Fort Benning before heading north to Uptown Columbus along the beautiful Riverwalk.  Runners will enjoy aid stations with water, sports drinks, and sports gels.

Columbus, GA is really becoming a great area for health and fitness minded Dads.  There are so many events that take advantage of the area’s great running trails.  We have 10+ miles of Riverwalk along the Chattahoochee River and, the nearly complete, Fall Line Trace that goes from Cooper Creek Park all the way to Columbus Regional Hospital.  For a list of even more local running events, visit Big Dog Running Co and pick the one that’s right for you.  If you’re not in the Columbus, GA area, find a running specific retailer and talk to them about races in your area.

Whatever you choose to do, just get out and get your legs moving.  Your kids will follow in your healthy footsteps.

#Dadurday Car Wash

What a wonderful day to have Guster out and about.  The weather was great and our cars were dirty!

Check us out cleaning the parking lot of cars.  Gus started out picking up everything from example.  He was enjoying every aspect about being outside.  The water and his crocs made his toes all crinkly.  Even grandpa came out to help for a moment.

Take a look at all the fun!
